Pen Reviews

We know your pen is a huge factor in having a positive experience with your planner, so we wanted to share some of our favorite (and not so favorite) pens with you and show you how they look in a Golden Coil planner!

The Pilot 7mm Pens

7mm pens in your Golden Coil planner

The Pilot Precise V7 is a nice option for a 7mm pen that is on the thinner side (ink and grip). The ink glides smoothly, but has the tendency to have a less reliable flow than the Pilot G2 07. It’s not quite as dark and rich as the G2 07, but it’s less susceptible to drag between letters.

The Pilot G2 07 is one of our favorite go-to pens. It’s reliable and the ink is rich and smooth. Although it glides nicely, it can clump slightly, which creates darker sections. Because the ink is so rich, it can drag a bit between letters, but overall it’s an excellent choice. We especially love the comfortable grip!

The Pilot Frixion 07 flows smoothly and has a comfortable grip, but it isn’t our top choice. The ink isn’t as rich as the other Pilot 7mm pens and it looks a bit watery. It also drags between letters and although the erasable feature is helpful when using something like traditional school notepad paper, it does more harm than good in a Golden Coil planner due to our digital print process and toothed finish on our paper. You can see in the photo that the ink doesn’t fully erase and can cause smudging of our own print lines (see the close-up below). We recommend using a different 7mm pen if you like this size!

The Felt Tip Pens

The Sharpie Pen is a lovely felt tip. The ink is rich, which can lead to some drag between letters, but the slight friction from the felt tip helps you feel more in control when writing. It’s heavier to hold compared to the Le Pen, but we think it’s a solid choice. It also doesn’t show through the paper!

Le Pen is our favorite felt tip pen. It’s lighter weight than the Sharpie Pen and although it has a similar amount of friction when writing, you can feel that it glides a bit more smoothly. It’s also less susceptible to drag between letters. We love how beautifully it makes marks and the wide color range available!

The Extra Fine Pens

The Muji .38 is our other favorite go-to pen! It’s lovely and delicate with a lightweight frame and smooth finish. Its marks are very thin, which gives you more control of the ink. Although it can feel a bit scratchy and sometimes the ink can be unreliable, it’s still our top choice for an ultra fine pen.

The Pilot P-500 is another excellent choice for an extra fine pen. It’s a bit thicker than the Muji and a little heavier to hold. It can also clump occasionally and because of the smooth flow of the ink, it’s susceptible to some drag between letters. That being said, it still writes smoothly and thin and lasts forever. It’s a wonderful option for a reliable extra fine pen!
