Making Resolutions That Last
Have you looked back at your 2020 New Year’s Resolutions? Hopefully it gives you a great laugh considering how much things have changed this year, but it may also give you some insight into adjustments you can make to your 2021 list. One thing we’ve all learned is that the ability to adapt and revise our goals helps us to continue to make progress. Here are our three simple suggestions for making a 2021 New Year’s Resolution List that will last:
SET REALISTIC GOALS - The word “realistic” is definitely relative, so you’ll have to decide what it means in your case, but be sure to evaluate what your capacities and resources are before setting a goal. Of course there will be things that change throughout the year and may shift your ability to achieve a goal, but do you best with what you know now. Maybe you’re wanting to learn a new skill, but finances and time mean you won’t be able to take a class this year. Could you instead set a goal to start teaching yourself in small ways? Replace 15 minutes of social media each day with watching a YouTube tutorial? You might have to get a little creative, but setting more realistic goals means you’ll actually make progress on them!
USE THE GOALS PAGE - We love using this page to plan out and break down goals! There’s a section to write out your thoughts about your goals and space to write down your overall yearly goals. Then, you can break them down into monthly, weekly, and daily action items and track them throughout the year. We’d also recommend scheduling each action item into your weekly spread—scheduling makes a huge difference for us in actually achieving our goals!
3. TAKE YOUR TIME - Like we said, flexibility is key in achieving goals. This also means giving yourself permission to take it at your own pace. If you feel overwhelmed by the timeline you’ve set for your goal, you’re more likely to jump ship. It’s better if you take the time you need so that you actually finish! Consider pacing yourself and only scheduling one action item of your goals at a time so you don’t burn out.
