Make the Best Ever Bucket List
Over the past year and a half, many of us have put life on hold. We’ve cancelled trips, postponed plans, and have come to appreciate the preciousness of the present. If you’re chomping at the bit to make your someday plans a reality, there’s no better time than now to put the bucket list that’s been living in your head to paper.
Give your bucket list a home.
When deciding where your bucket list will live, consider who it’s for and who needs to see it.
Golden Coil has an excellent Bucket List +Page (see below), which works perfectly for a personal bucket list within your planner or notebook. If your bucket list is group effort, consider placing your list in a spot where everyone can see it, add to it, and make notes. If you lean digital, an editable document in the cloud works just as well. You may have one bucket list, or you may have many, but your bucket list is something you may want to keep for a while, so house it somewhere that can withstand the test of time.
Name your list.
Bucket list can feel somewhat morbid (referring to things to do before you “kick the bucket”). Consider a title that’s going to get you excited every time you look at your list. Get creative! “Our Must-Do List”, “100 Things for this Lifetime”, “My to-do list for an Incredibly Amazing and Exciting Life” are all on the table.
Consult all relevant parties.
If your list is for the whole family, gather everyone together to brainstorm. Be open! What’s a dream list with parameters?
Look near and far
We often think of bucket lists as being limited to big dreams, but they don’t have to be. While aspirational items (like skydiving or visiting every continent) are bucket list go-tos, simpler items, or things closer to home are no less bucket list worthy. Making beef wellington is one of the things at the top of my list!
Diversify
While you’re thinking about things big and small, also consider different types of to-dos:
TRAVEL: Where do you want to go? What do you want to experience there? What season?
FOOD: Are there things you want to cook? Eat? Classes you want to take?
SPORTS: Is there a certain game you want to see? A ball park you want to a visit? A sport you’ve never seen live? Something you want to learn to play?
SKILLS: Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn? Or teach?
CREATIVITY: Do you have a project you’ve always wanted to start? Or something you’ve promised yourself you’d finally finish?
Build a Budget
As the saying goes, the best things in life are free, but that multi-month trip through South America probably won’t be. Consider your budget. Tick off some of the less expensive items on your list while you save for the pricier ones.
Be accountable
If you need a little lift to help make “someday” a reality, enlist friends and family. Email your finished list to 10 friends. Ask your family if they want to partake in anything on your list. Keep yourself accountable by putting your list somewhere you can see it regularly.
Start Backwards
Not sure where to start? Make a reverse bucket list! What are all of the awesome things you’ve done in life? Look back for some inspiration to help you move forward.
